چکیده

Ka band, the 20/30 GHz frequency band for satellite communications, has gained much interest in recent times. It is well suited for applications with small sized earth stations. The major disadvantage of Ka band, however, is its sensitivity to rain fading. Several satellite experiments are being carried out at the moment studying so called adaptive fade countermeasures, the purpose of which is to improve link quality in presence of rain. In this paper, the design and early laboratory experiments of a prototype fade countermeasure system implemented on a TDMA controller are described. This system is used for an experiment carried out by German PTT, Swiss PTT and DLR to investigate the significance of adaptive fade countermeasures for the availabilty of a Ka band satellite link. First results show, that an effective improvement of the link is possible with simple fade countermeasures.

An inexpensive rain fade countermeasure technique for DA-TDMA satellite systems

Rain attenuation countermeasure systems for geostationary satellite transmissions have been proposed that use a variety of methods. This paper presents a technique which only requires a burst modem that is able to vary its bit and coding rate on a sub-burst basis coupled with a convolutional encoder/Viterbi decoder. A complete method for predicting the attenuation at the receive time is describ...

Modelling And Detection of Rain Attenuation For MF-TDMA Satellite Networks Utilizing Fade Mitigation Techniques

Whilst the ability to characterise the on-average monthly or yearly performance of systems without countermeasures is well determined, such methods are not efficient at Ka-band and above. Optimal fade mitigation technique design requires statistically and dynamically correct attenuation time-series. Optimal allocation of communication resources requires consideration of the channel statistics a...

Ka Band System and Propagation Effects on System Performance

AbstractThe Advanced Communication Technology Satellite (ACTS) is an experimental communications satellite system launched in September 1993. ACTS introduces many new technologies, including operation in the Ka frequency band. ACTS uses multiple hopping narrow beams and very small aperture terminal (VSAT) technology to establish a system availability of 99.5% for a bit-error-rates of 5x10 or be...

Modeling Ka-band scintillation as a fractal process

We propose a model that describes the signal fading process due to scintillation in the presence of rain. We analyzed a data set of up-link (30 GHz) and down-link (20 GHz) attenuation values averaged over 1 second intervals. The data are samples relative to 10 significant events, for a total of 180,000 s, recorded at the Spino d’Adda (North of Italy) station using the Olympus satellite. Our ana...

Special Effects: Antenna Wetting, Short Distance Diversity and Depolarization

The Advanced Communication Technology Satellite (ACTS) communications system operates in the Ka frequency band. ACTS uses multiple, hopping, narrow beams and very small aperture terminal (VSAT) technology to establish a system availability of 99.5% for bit-error-rates of 5x 10 or better over the continental United States. In order maintain this minimum system availability in all US rain zones, ...
